Ground cover plants
ground cover plants...

Using ground cover plants is a good method of labour-saving gardening, as once the plants are established they take care of themselves and eliminate the task of weeding. Before planting, the plot should be free from weeds such as Dock, Dandelion, Couch Grass etc.

The plants vary from low-growing ones (carpeters), clump formers, hummocks, spreaders and sprawlers. These can be alpines, annuals, herbaceous plants and low-growing shrubs..

Here are a few examples of the different types of ground cover plants that:

Love sunny places:

Carpeters - Acena (New Zealand Burr), Cotula and Tymus serpyllum varieties.
Herbaceous - Stachys, Sedum, Veronica, Festuca glauca (blue grass)
Shrubs - Genista hispanica, Santolina, Cistus corbariensis, Dwarf Laveners, Heathers, Cotoneaster dammeri.

Love shady or partial shady places:

Carpeters - Ajuga like 'Atropurpurea' and 'Burgundy Glow'
Herbaceous - Bergani

Prefer clay soil:

Bergenia varieties
Corydalis flexuosa
Crocosmia varieties
