As well as dramatic architectural plants and exotic specimens sourced from specialist growers throughout Europe, we are keen to promote locally grown product. Over half our plants are grown here on our own nurseries, and our bedding plants, herbs and vegetables supplied from neighbouring growers.
'Plantation' - previously known as 'The Hidden Nursery' has just completed the second stage of a complete redevelopment of the six acre site (Summer 2010), changes which already set it apart from other 'garden centres' throughout the area.
Behind the transformation is Andy Yates, an award winning garden designer with medals from the RHS show at Tatton among his successes. The site has been in the Yates family since 1935 and had until recently been leased to another operator.
"A complete re-development was the only way forward" said Andy, aged 36. "Although there has been a strong plant offer here, the infrastructure had become neglected. We had the chance to do something, and we knew it could be something different. Instead of just selling plants and product to people, we wanted to show how to use them in exciting, inspirational and innovative ways."
'Plantation' is all about garden design, themed displays, planting combinations and the use of landscaping materials in cameo garden settings, providing a unique garden experience. "Garden Centres like to place their plants in alphabetical order, usually in Latin and always in categories," says Andy, "we don't have many Latin speaking customers, and imagine doing the food shop alphabetically, with baked beans by the entrance, milk next to nappies and yoghurt by the tills!"
"We had to change this, to look at it from the customer's perspective, to show how our plants & products could be interlinked with each other as they would in the garden." 'Plantation' is keen to show the contemporary use of plants in containers and baskets, using striking foliage in addition to flower colour. We offer both ready finished items and a planting service to refresh your previous purchases. Collection/delivery to your door can be arranged as required.
